Ian Lawrie QC is a specialist in both criminal and regulatory law. For details of Ian's regulatory practice please see his specialist profile.

Previously Ian was a grade 4 prosecutor on the Western Circuit. He was regularly instructed to prosecute, often without a junior, cases such as murder, multiple arson with intent to endanger life, historical sexual offences and multiple rapes.

Those areas of instruction have continued following Ian taking silk in April 2011. Ian also advises and continues to act on behalf of private prosecutions brought by Local Authorities and Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities.

Ian sits as a Recorder on the Western Circuit and is the Chambers Equality and Diversity Officer.

Recent examples of prosecution work

  • Reg v Wolfe (2012)
    Prosecuted farmer for manslaughter following collision on private land with trespassing trial motorcyclist.
  • Reg v Coleman (2011)
    Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a lorry driver, for causing death by dangerous driving. The driver conducted a ‘U’ Turn on a dual carriageway and caused a collision that led to the death of two people.
  • Reg v Haynes (2011)
    Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a former soldier for a sequence of rapes and abductions over a 6 month period. Leading Colin Meeke of Wiltshire CPS.
  • Reg v Larkin (2010)
    Prosecuted and secured the conviction of defendant for manslaughter and arson. The defendant set light to his duvet following a drunken argument with his girlfriend. The resulting fire destroyed the defendant’s home and resulted in the death of the girlfriend.
  • Reg v Gittins and others (2010)
    Prosecuted and secured the conviction of defendants involved in shooting incident. In varying ways the defendants arranged for the victim to be lured into a trap and ambushed. A firearm was discharged at the car, narrowly missing the intended target but wounding a passenger in the vehicle.

Recent examples of defence work

  • Reg v Barnes (2012)
    Dealt with contested confiscation hearing for defendant convicted of large scale conspiracy to supply cannabis. Initial claim in excess of £25 million eventually adjudicated as being £2.5 million.
  • Reg v Flight Lieutenant Hamilton (2011)
    Defended at Courts martial former helicopter pilot who was charged with neglect in flying likely to cause loss of life or bodily injury to any person contrary to section 49 of the Air Force Act 1955. Three men, including the helicopter pilot died as a consequence. The case raised interesting issues as to abuse of abuses whereby alleged faults in RAF training may have been a contributory factor to the co-pilot’s neglect.
  • Reg v McKenzie (2011)
    Represented appellant in the Privy Council appealing against conviction for murder in Jamaica. Leading Adam Hiddleston of Chambers.
  • Reg v Legall & Others (2011)
    Defended main conspirator in large scale class A drug conspiracy in Cardiff.
  • Reg v Court (2011)
    Defended former cadet major in respect of historical allegations for indecent assault.
  • Reg v Cox (2011)
    Defended man accused of attempting to murder his former wife by strangulation with a dog lead.
  • Reg v Withers (2011)
    Defended historical sexual abuse allegations
  • Reg v Samra (2011)
    Defended successfully a sub postmistress accused of stealing money from elderly customers through system of ‘double tapping’ on account cards. Leading Chris Oswald of Ross Solicitors.
